From the artist’s statement:
Enveloped in the throb of the music stage, young bodies simulate the spectacle of boundlessness and entitlement, of celebrating youth while mourning a world that is not entirely their own. These gestures serve as a visual interpretation of bodies oscillating between pleasure and agony, representation and abstraction, expectation and realization. In this painted space, which is built on the familiar language of amateur band photography, music video framing, poster art, and religious icons, these figures perform their masculinity. They have been enthroned by their own unified abandon. Every headbang and swan dive seems to simultaneously reflect a fear of power as well as the shameless longing for it. They might also serve as propaganda for my own macho delusion; they indulge the fantasy of superstardom while subsequently warning against the dangers of privilege. Visceral and quick, I imagine these painted concertgoers as capacitors for violence, as rulers who wear their tussled hair like desperate crowns.
